Using Acupuncture to Relieve Stress

“STRESS IS NOT A STATE OF MIND… IT’S MEASURABLE AND DANGEROUS, AND HUMANS CAN’T SEEM TO FIND THEIR OFF-SWITCH.” -ROBERT SAPOLSKY

Winning the Battle Against Stress

Raise your hand if you’re stressed. Now, raise your hand if the holidays make you want to run and scream, maniacally. Pretty much everyone who was out on Black Friday is in agreement of that. After the delicious feast and wonderful slumber that Thanksgiving brings, you immediately go into overdrive stressing over the next holiday. Luckily, you don’t have to risk your health or sanity for the ones you love because… (drum roll)… acupuncture!

Acupuncture is a very popular alternative to help decrease or eliminate stress. When the human body undergoes stress it signals certain hormones to increase and others to decrease. Due to this hormonal feedback, many people who have stress frequently find themselves getting sick, or have difficulty losing weight. Some may even find it difficult to concentrate. Things are just not balanced the way they need to be in order to function properly.

How does acupuncture help?

Studies have shown that acupuncture slows down the body’s production of stress hormones. The acupuncturist will choose specific points to insert a needle in order to harmonize the body. At that point you are able to breathe and relax on the table. It is a great opportunity to give yourself that desired “me time” and practice mindful breathing to just enhance the treatment and results. When hormones can balance out then the body and mind can balance out.

Indicators of Stress

Some indicators of stress can be headaches, high blood pressure, stomach upset/digestive issues, fatigue, rashes, irritability, sweating, insomnia, and a number of other things. Chinese medicine will always look at the root of the problem and help alleviate the symptoms that come with it. Patients of acupuncture can absolutely feel immediate results of feeling relaxed and recharged, however, it is very important to understand that long-term results can take time, a subject that many people stress over. It is a lifelong practice in conjunction with acupuncture that will yield dramatic results of feeling better over the long haul.

In order to avoid frantically buying gifts with no thought behind them or exploding at a loved one over a holiday dinner, get your stress in check. If you are already seeking help through therapy and/or medication then it isn’t a bad idea to add acupuncture to your regime to help aid the process.
